At age three Junior's father died and his mother chose not to remarry. As a widowed mother of six, she continued operating the Galbraith farm with the help of her children. Junior attended the Springdale Country School and was a 1942 graduate of the Gibson High School. In June of 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for two years in Europe as an Auto Repairman. After his honorable discharge Sergeant Joseph Junior Galbraith returned home and on December 28, 1946 was united in marriage to Marcella Bell Paul in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Junior and Marcella raised their three daughters on his family's farm northwest of Keswick. During his time on the farm Junior became well known for raising Hereford cattle. In 1973 Junior and Marcella sold their farm and bought a home in Keswick. He worked at Kingsberry Homes and the University of Iowa until retirement in 1988. Like most retired farmers, Junior chose to uphold his strong work ethic and continued working for CPS in Keswick. He was a sixty year member of the American Legion and the White Oak Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where Geneseo VFW Post No. 5083 will accord military honors. Private inurnment will be in North Cemetery, Geneseo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Vandemore, Geneseo. As he requested, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Maple City Band Endowment or the Dale E. Lodge Memorial Fund. Dale was born Dec. 21, 1918, in Lorraine Township, the son of Roy and Sadie Gobeyn Lodge. He married Margaret Cox Aug. 31, 1941, in Geneseo. She died Oct. 2, 1953. He then married Anne Hieronymus July 14, 1956, in Atlanta, Ill. He spent his entire life in Geneseo after graduating from high school in the class of 1936. He served in the Army Air Forces from January 1944 to May 1946, part of which he served in the European Theatre. He was a painting and decorating contractor. Dale was always involved in music, community and athletic projects. He was a golfer and a dedicated timer for wrestling, cross country and track events in schools. He was active at the community center. He was a member of the Maple City Band, and had been president and trustee. He was instrumental in establishing the Maple City Band Endowment Fund to preserve the band. He was one of the first members of the Bettendorf Park Band when it started in 1967. For many years, he played in the Kewanee Clown Band and in a local German band. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Geneseo Historical Association, a life member of American Legion Post No. 350 and Geneseo VFW Post 5083. He and his daughter Susan were the first father and daughter to be members in the VFW. Dale blew Taps for hundreds of military funerals in Geneseo over the years. His children and grandchildren were a very important part of his life, and he followed them in their lives with pride and enthusiasm. He is survived by his wife, Anne; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Paul Backs, Leavenworth, Kan., Diane and Mike Hamman, Tomahawk, Wis.; and son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Katherine Lodge, Geneseo. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Nathan and Rebecca Backs, Leavenworth, and Joshua and Benjamin Dale Lodge, Geneseo. He was preceded in death by two sons, Andrew and Stacy; his parents; a sister, Gladys Way; and a brother, Glenn Lodge.
