He married Willempje (Elma) Doremus (1806-1893) of New York. She was born on June 21, 1806 to Cornelius T. Doremus and Lena Mandeville.

They had 9 children.
Occupation:
For 47 years he was the pastor of the Church of Raritan, New Jersey.
Biography:
According to the Griggstown Reformed Church: "On June 21, 1842, Reverend Abraham Messler of Somerville, Reverend Isaac A. Van Doren and George Schenk, of Griggstown met in Griggstown to receive the certificates of those who had decided to withdraw from neighboring churches to become a part of the new congregation. Reverend Messler preached a sermon as thirty-eight Christians from both sides of the river presented their certificates to the committee. The Classis had ruled that at least thirty certificates were necessary in order to form the new church."
