CAMBRIA - Lelia Juanita Vaughn, 87, departed this earthly life as quietly and peacefully as she lived her life Monday, March 16, 2009, at her home in Cambria.
Lelia was born May 18, 1921, on a small farm in rural De Soto to loving parents, Lorenzo Dow and Aretta (McCree) Howell II. She married Noble Vaughn on April 9, 1944, in Marietta, Okla., in Love County, by the Rev. H.G. Luck. He preceded her in death Oct. 21, 1996.
Lelia was a homemaker until the very end. She loved to cook, and fill her home with family, friends, and anyone entering her door was a friend. She liked to travel, and some of her kids named her a go-go girl. She liked to work jigsaw puzzles, write songs, and poems of praise to her Lord and Savior.
Lelia was a member of Cambria Christian Church, where she sang in the choir and was a faithful worker. She considered the church her family.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mark Provo of Cambria, Wanda and Danny Hewlett of Cambria, Vicki and Barry Bishop of Herrin, and Nancy and Michael Bullard of Bluford; son and daughter-in-law, John and Sandra Vaughn of Herrin; two sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and G.B. Morris of Crab Orchard and Nettie Jenkins of Cambria; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Howell of De Soto; sister-in-law, Eileen Marks of Royalton; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Mark and Tina Provo II of Panama City, Fla., Betty and John Rosenberger of Carterville, Jeff and Julie Bullard Sr. of Woodlawn, Cindy and Rob Fuller of Troy, Mo., Greg Bullard of Bluford, Spencer Hewlett of Carbondale, Ashley Mize of Herrin, Lesley and Jared Pender of Cambria, Suzanna Vaughn and Joshua Vaughn, both of Herrin; nine great-grandchildren; and also survived by her nieces, nephews and her church family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Jacob Lee Vaughn; great-granddaughter, Natalie Nicole Pender; and two brothers, Virgil and Robert Howell.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Joe Hamon, and the Rev. R.H. Chitwood officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cambria Christian Church or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
